Route Assistant


Responsible for assisting the driver of a rear loading trash truck on municipal surface streets and alleyways by safely loading Municipal Solid Waste, Recycling, Yard Waste or Designated Bulk Items into the collection vehicle.

Duties require heavy industrial lifting of containers to waist high, gripping with hands, moving at a steady pace with occasional bending.

Provides courteous customer service, able to communicate clearly with customers, supervisors and public officials.

Gets in and out of the truck multiple times per day to empty waste containers and lift objects.

Keeps truck cab and body clean according to company standards. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Ability to learn and follow all Gold Medal Environmental safety rules, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Ability and fitness to lift 70 plus pounds throughout a typical 10-hour shift.
  • Safely climb on and off the truck to load refuse waste and trash containers into the hopper of the truck and can operate the hydraulic controls.
  • Clean up any spilled waste that occurs during the collection operation.
  • Inspect collection vehicle throughout the day the day to ensure safe efficient operation and not cause damage to Gold Medal Environmental property or equipment.
  • Report all accidents, injuries and property damage immediately.


This work is typically performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employee is frequently exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease and foul odors. The work requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to gloves, boots and high visibility clothing. Some PPE is provided on a quarterly basis (including gloves, high visibility vests and winter wear) by Gold Medal Environmental. A boot allowance will be provided every six months. Any PPE that is lost or destroyed because of employee negligence or improper use will be the responsibility of the employee to pay Gold Medal Environmental for the replacement of the equipment.


Candidates for this position must have a valid drivers license and the ability to qualify for a CDL Permit within 6 months. Must be able to communicate in the English language both verbally and in written form. Must be able to work Mondays through Fridays and Saturdays when scheduled. Must be ready, willing, and able to report to work prepared for the day at the scheduled time. All helper positions are subject to DOT pre-employment, post-accident, random, and reasonable suspicion drug testing.
